Welcome the world’s only museum dedicated to one of the world’s most extraordinary individuals, Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton.
About Burton
Burton's life reads like an outrageous work of fiction...too unbelievable to be true.
He was a famous/infamous Victorian explorer, adventurer, maverick, spy, scholar and translator of books like the Kama Sutra and 1001 Arabian Nights.
And much more!
History seems to have passed him by somewhat. Our mission is to change that.
About the Museum
Stepping into our Museum is stepping into a world of adventure and exploration.
A storytelling installation, with over 30 voices, 28 curated exhibits, that brings to life his remarkable career.
The Museum itself is styled on his smoking room in Trieste.
In this intimate setting, the storytelling will transport you back to the time and place of his daring exploits and his boundless curiosity.
We want you to leave, not only having learnt about this extraordinary man, but to be inspired to embrace your own spirit of adventure and discovery.
Being located in a private residence in central St Ives in Cornwall, UK, we pride ourselves on not only being one of the smallest, but most quirky and unique museums in Cornwall, but in the UK.
Come and judge for yourself!
The Practicalities
Admission to the Museum is £8 (cash only) and by appointment only (07986 123305 text/WhatsApp preferred) at an agreed time, including in the evening where the Museum is lit up by Moroccan lanterns. Visits last just over 1 hour.
